We’d all love to own a single dictionary word .com. And sometimes it works out — if you have the budget and find an owner willing to sell, it’s absolutely worth pursuing. But in my experience, it’s very rare and not something you can rely on as a strategy. So the question becomes: how do you keep your domain name simple and easy to remember without depending on that kind of luck?
My rule of thumb is simple: when you tell someone your domain name, they should only need to remember two parts.
Two words and .com
I consider .com the default — it’s not something people need to actively remember. So it doesn’t count as one of your two parts. That means you can use two words in your .com domain and still keep it easy to recall.
I personally prefer two recognizable words — two real, familiar words that together form the product name. This way you get an exact match between your product name and your domain:
- RoomAI.com (Room + AI)
- BetaList.com (Beta + List)
- Fastmail.com (Fast + Mail)
