Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

If you expect a decent chunk of your traffic to come from search engines, it’s important to consider the SEO implications of your domain name choice. Here are the things I consider:

How your TLD affects SEO

Google and other search engines consider many factors when deciding what to show for a given search query. Your TLD is one of them. If you’re using a country code TLD like .de, search engines will assume your site is targeting a German audience. If that’s not what you want, use a generic TLD instead.

But what about .co and .io? Technically those are country code TLDs (.co for Colombia, .io for British Indian Ocean Territory), but they’ve become so widely used as generic domains that Google now treats them as generic. The same goes for .ai. So these are safe to use when targeting an international audience.
